Laszlo Van Leeuwen’s Jungle Boy has reached 100,000 streams on Spotify. It is a new milestone for a release with a deeply personal story – and the journey continues here on 3PM, where Jungle Boy is also available to listen to.
Behind the number is a project shaped by movement, live musicianship and time spent far from familiar surroundings. Every listen brings another person into that story.
For Laszlo, the name comes from lived experience. Born in the Netherlands and raised across more than twenty countries in Africa, Europe and Asia, his relationship with music has always crossed borders. His path includes teenage rap battles in Ghana, performances in Southern Africa and years spent living off-grid in the jungles of Peru, Brazil and Costa Rica.
Friends came to know him as Jungle Laz. During those years, meditation, yoga, shamanic traditions and an exploration of human consciousness became part of his life. Those experiences help explain the perspective behind his writing: questions of identity, freedom and the search for a deeper sense of self.
Jungle Boy brings that personal history into a cinematic origin story. It follows the idea of losing yourself as part of finding your Self – a theme that gives the release its emotional centre.
The project was recorded by Laszlo with a live band and filmed in Costa Rica over the course of a year. That combination of music and film gives the story room to unfold through sound, performance and place.
The setting belongs to the story itself. Costa Rica forms part of the wider journey that shaped Jungle Laz, giving the visual world a direct connection to the person behind the music.
Today, Laszlo is based on his self-sustainable farm in South Africa, creating music from The Jungle Bunker, his underground studio. The surroundings have changed, while the thread running through the work continues: rhythm, philosophy and a life translated into songs.
Reaching 100,000 Spotify streams marks another chapter for Jungle Boy. To everyone who has listened, returned to it or shared it with someone else: thank you for helping the music travel.
The story is there for new listeners to discover, and for those who already know the release to revisit with a little more context.
